Most observers find that the data sets shipped after the observation were calibrated satisfactorily, however, there are several reasons why you may wish to recalibrate the data set, among these reasons:
- A better reference file may have become available
- You may wish to omit a calibration step that was done
- You may wish to use a different version of the calibration code
STSDAS tasks in various packages can be used to create new reference tables and files, change keywords, and modify data, thus redefining the parameters used by the calibration software, and creating a data set that is calibrated the way you want.
The flow chart presented in Figure 6.1 shows the basic process used to calibrate a data set produced by any instrument on the Space Telescope.
