IRAF Networking

Very often, when IRAF is unable to establish a connection to a remote machine, the message is obscure or incorrect. For example, if the .irafhosts file is missing or is incorrectly set up, IRAF networking may generate the message "no files found". It is generally a good idea to first use the dir command to be sure that IRAF can see the files in question, before trying to access them over the network.

When moving files between the Suns and the VAXes, you need to make sure you have the following lines in your VAX LOGIN.COM file:

There are a few points to remember about moving files across the network:

Tasks like sun2vax can move the files as they convert the binary format between the systems.
When moving STSDAS images using ftp, you must set the transfer mode to binary or else problems will occur such as headers getting concatenated and parts of the image getting truncated.
