PyDrizzle automates and simplifies the operation of the IRAF task drizzle under the Python scripting language and PyRAF, the Python-based interface to IRAF. It automates the calculation of parameters and supports writing analysis scripts in Python. PyDrizzle has been developed by the Science Software Group at the Space Telescope Science Institute.

Latest Release

STSDAS Release Version 3.1 comes with the latest released version of PyDrizzle. However, it does not come with the Multidrizzle. This requires a separate download and installation in order to run Multidrizzle. PyDrizzle supports Multidrizzle, a STSDAS task to perform cosmic-ray identification and rejection, distortion correction and dither-combining all in one task. This version represents a major enhancement implementing rigorous WCS fitting between the inputs and the output frame and velocity aberration correction for ACS observations retrieved from the STScI archive after 23 June 2003. Most importantly, compatible versions of both PyDrizzle and Multidrizzle are now included in the same download file.

NOTE:This version is an MAJOR update to the version released with STSDAS Version 3.0.

Revision History for Latest Version

Information on what was changed in the last version can be found here.

PyDrizzle Requirements

PyRAF

PyDrizzle uses PyRAF to control the operation of IRAF tasks and to setup a parameter-based interface.

STSDAS V3.0

STSDAS Version 3.0 has been updated to automatically load Python tasks and packages found in the STSDAS tree, including the first release of PyDrizzle.

numarray

PyDrizzle REQUIRES the use of numarray Version 0.5 (or later). It can be downloaded from the numarray development site.

Python 2.2

PyDrizzle relies on features of Python 2.2 for its object-oriented implementation.

MultiDrizzle

MultiDrizzle Home Page

This package does not come with STSDAS 3.1 and needs to be downloaded separately. This software package provides cosmic-ray detection/rejection, distortion-correction and dither-combining all in one simple step for the first time for ACS data, as well as WFPC2 data.

Learning about PyDrizzle

PyDrizzle Tutorial (PDF)

A quick 'first session' tutorial on how to use PyDrizzle as written up in Chapter 1 of the Users Manual.

PyDrizzle Users Manual (PDF)

This manual provides a tutorial on how to use PyDrizzle, includes an extensive description of all the methods (currently) available. This manual, however, is only a DRAFT document and is NOT complete yet.

This is a link to pydoc created web pages of the version of PyDrizzle currently installed at STScI.

Additional PyDrizzle Documentation

ACS pipeline calibration processing currently uses PyDrizzle to perform distortion correction on all ACS observations.  More information on this application of PyDrizzle, and others, can be found on the ACS Drizzle Page
